The Best of Depeche Mode Vol.1

Depeche Mode hold a unique place in music history - they have influenced many genres, continue to be a major influence on some of todays new breed, and have spanned nearly 3 decades producing ground breaking, innovative, yet incredibly compelling music. This collection offers little to existing followers like me, other than the outstanding new single 'Martyr', it does offer a fantastic opportunity for those new and/or curious about DM to access their back catalogue without the chronolgical sequence of the singles releases. The album offers insight into how the band has evolved from their early 'poppy' roots of 'just can't get enough' to honouring their values of continually pushing the boundaries of conventional sounding mainstream music - still very resonant in 2005's excellent 'Playing the Angel' offering. On this album you'll find the stomping anthems of 'Personal jesus' 'Martyr' and last years 'Suffer Well', coupled with sensitive electronic gems such as 'Shake the Disease' as well as the ground breaking powerful electronica of 'Master and Servant' and 'Everything Counts'. Hits all over the place and not a substandard track anywhere - even those tracks now over 20 years old hardly sound dated. The volume one says much of their longevity and success, plus the fact that time/age/solo commitments may prevent the band fulfilling a further chronological singles album.

Shattered Kylie pulls out of gig

November 14, 2006

KYLIE MINOGUE was forced to pull out of a gig with U2 yesterday with exhaustion.

The Aussie star is worn out after giving her all on the opening dates of her rescheduled Showgirl Homecoming Tour.

She had promised to sing with BONO to thank him for joining her on stage for a duet at her gig on Sunday night.

But the Pop Princess, recovering from breast cancer, wasn’t up to performing in Sydney at the Dublin super-group’s gig.

A source said: “Kylie called Bono to explain that she had worn herself out. She is really feeling the physical effects of her return to the stage.

“He told her to spend Monday resting, get her energy levels fully restored and relax.

“It wasn’t a problem at all. Everyone realises Kylie is putting herself through the mill for her tour.”

Bono did perform a tribute to Kylie, singing a verse of Can’t Get You Out Of My Head — complete with an embarrassing jig to go with it.

I think Kylie is incredibly brave, throwing herself into her physically demanding tour dates.

It is barely 18 months since she was diagnosed and just weeks since doctors told her she was winning her cancer battle. But taking on two-and-a-half-hour performances three times a week is a big ask — even if it was a singer at the peak of physical fitness.

Kylie was snapped yesterday going out for a walk in Sydney in a little brown dress. She was pale but still had a smile for photographers — as she has done throughout her illness.

You can only admire Kylie for honouring her tour dates with her loyal home-country fans.

I just hope the pressure and physical stress she endures on the remaining dates don’t set back her recovery.

Megastar Bono summed up the feelings so many people have for the former Neighbours star when I met him earlier this year.

He told me: “I would lay rose petals on the ground she walks on.”

The Showgirl goes on

As you know, Kylie made her live comeback over the weekend. Here's a clip of her performing the new song 'White Diamonds' (which is another Scissor Sisters track) and 'On A Night Like This'.

All Saints want Spice Girls to re-form!

All Saints have called for former chart rivals Spice Girls to re-form.The band, who are at number three in the singles chart with 'Rock Steady' after recently getting back together themselves, said that Posh and co should follow suit."When we did get offered a new record deal, no one had said anything about any other band," said singer Mel Blatt."Then it was Take That, East 17, Spice Girls, even Eternal. The time is right for the Spice Girls to reform - we've done it, so should they."Indeed.

Single Of The Week Snow Patrol & Martha Wainwright

Snow Patrol are a terrible act who keep making brilliant records. Martha Wainwright is a brilliant act who keeps making terrible records.Snow Patrol are still a terrible act but 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' continues their run of brilliant records AND gives Martha Wainwright her first. It is a song which makes you want to BURST INTO TEARS ON THE BUS without knowing why, ie the best sort of song on the face of the planet.
Also out this week... SINGLES: Justin Timberlake's 'My Love' is the runner-up Single Of The Week but sounds less amazing than it did before Omarion's 'Icebox' cantered into view, 365's 'One Touch' is great but not great enough, Robbie's 'Lovelight' doesn't quite do the job either, Oasis' b-side re-releases are the absolute epitome of will-this-do Greatest Hits efforts, Christina's 'Hurt' is so boring and sonically offensive that we have officially Gone Off Her again, The Charlatans' 'You're So Pretty, We're So Pretty' is beyond perfunctory, Betty Curse's 'Girl With Yellow Hair' is brilliant and Radar's '5th Columnist' is, we believe, very good indeed. ALBUMS: Westlife's 'The Love Album' proves that it is literally impossible to go wrong with 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', George Michael's 'Twenty Five' makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE, Sugababes' 'Overloaded' is one of the century's best collections of modern pop music, Simon Webbe's 'Grace' is like the first album, except again, Depeche Mode's 'Best Of Vol 1' is unsurprisingly listenable, and Staind, who have had three hits only one of which went Top 20 and none of which were in the last three years, are releasing their greatest hits. Oh and the All Saints album is out too, it's very good, go and buy it, etc etc etc.

Description'Motion In The Ocean' is the third album from pop-punk quartet McFly. Produced by The Collective - which features former A lead-singer Jason Perry - and written by the band themselves, the album sees McFly continue to with the trademark sound that has dominated their previous releases, a mix of harmony-laden pop and summery sing-a-long rock. The single 'Star Girl' is also featured.

MABBA

MADONNA is working with ABBA legends AGNETHA FALTSKOG and FRIDA LYNGSTAD on tracks for her new album.
Abba fan Madge is deep in discussions with the pair about recording together on her follow-up to No1 album Confessions On A Dance Floor.
And even though Agnetha has lived like a virtual recluse and Frida hung up her high-heeled platform shoes years ago — they have agreed to go into the studio.
This will be a truly massive collaboration of the music monarchy — The Queen Of Pop and the original Dancing Queens joining forces.
It should be a sure-fire hit if Madge, seen going to the movies in London’s Mayfair, chooses to release their joint studio efforts as a single. A source said: “Madonna has been in contact with Agnetha and Frida for a few months.
“Madonna was the driving force behind the idea because she was so happy with her sample of Gimme Gimme Gimme on Hung Up.
“Agnetha and Frida loved it, they really warmed to Madonna for rejuvenating one of their most famous tracks.”
My source revealed they will write and record together as soon as Madge, her producing partner STUART PRICE and the ex Abba girls are all free.
Abba fellas BJORN ULVAEUS and BENNY ANDERSSON will not be involved but are believed to have given the plans the thumbs up.
Madonna made music history while writing Confessions together with Price, becoming the first artist ever to get permission to remix and sample an Abba track.
At the time she said: “I had to send my emissary to Stockholm with a letter and the record begging them and imploring them and telling them how much I worship their music, telling them it was a homage to them, which is all true.
“They could have said no. Thank God they didn’t.”
Earlier this week I revealed Madonna provided a message on the sleevenotes for the Swedish supergroup’s Greatest Hits, which hit the shops on Monday.
She wrote: “Abba’s timeless music continues to inspire me. It’s joyous. Standing still when you hear Abba is impossible.
“When I started recording my Confessions On A Dance Floor album, Stuart Price and I played their music constantly. Hung Up is my homage to their contribution to music.”
Madge is also working on fresh material with her ex LENNY KRAVITZ.
Price, Kravitz, Abba and Madge?
It’s safe to say that will be another Madonna No1 album then . . .
